This footage is part of the record of the Prince of Wales' 1921-1922 "Oriental Grand Tour" and is kept in the archives of the Imperial War Museums, London. It depicts the Prince's short visit to Api Api (Jesselton, in North Borneo), now Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
It is recorded that the light cruiser HMS Cairo, into which the Prince had transhipped from the HMS Renown at Labuan, made a rapid voyage of three hours, and passing between Gaya and Sapanga Islands dropped anchor off Jesselton pier at 11.35 in the morning of 18.5.1922. Before visiting Labuan and Jesselton, the Prince was in Manila where he suffered a minor injury whilst playing polo against the US Cavalry regiment.
The territory of North Borneo was originally established by concessions of the Sultanates of Brunei and Sulu in 1877 and 1878 to a German-born representative of Austria-Hungary, a businessman and diplomat, von Overbeck.
